BaBB Picks A Cowbucks
Shopping Spree Winner
Building a Better Brattleboro has announced the winner of a downtown
Brattleboro shopping spree in the Cowbucks promotion that took place
during Strolling of the Heifers Weekend earlier this month. The winner
is Ellen M. Spring of Turners Falls, Mass. She
will be invited to visit Brattleboro again to choose $1500 in merchandise
and services from among the 54 participating downtown businesses.
The drawing took place Tuesday, June 16 at noon at the Robert H.
Gibson River Garden. The winning ticket was drawn by Dan
Yates, president of Brattleboro Savings & Loan, which sponsored
the promotion. Yates is also board
chair of Building a Better Brattleboro, which organized the promotion along with
Strolling of the Heifers.
Cowbucks was credited with increasing business at downtown stores
during Strolling of the Heifers Weekend. Andrea Livermore,
executive director of Building a Better Brattleboro, said: “Large,
successful events, like the Strolling of the Heifers can be a challenge
in the short term for the retail community, because people come
to town to participate in the event rather than to shop.”
“With Cowbucks, however, we were able to feature Brattleboro’s unique
shopping experience. Cowbucks met the needs of the retail community
and capitalized on the success of the Stroll.”
Orly Munzing, executive director of Strolling of the Heifers, added: “We’ve
been interested in working with the downtown business community for
some time to develop a winning formula for success on the day of
the stroll. I think
we really succeeded this year.”
Assisting Livermore and Muzing in the organization of Cowbucks was
Donna Simons, co-owner of A Candle in the Night.

Art of Action "The Artists' Choice Tour"
The Arts Council is collaborating with visionary Vermont entrepreneur
and philanthropist Lyman Orton to produce and deliver the ART OF ACTION:
SHAPING VERMONT'S FUTURE THROUGH ART. This project commissions visual
artists to create suites of artwork that address issues identified
by Vermonters as essential to our state's future.
Informed by work conducted by the Council on the Future of Vermont,
the artwork created for the Art of Action is designed to inspire Vermonters
to act toward attaining their vision for our state's future.
Curator Janet Van Fleet has finalized our Art of Action exhibition
schedule. Beginning in September 2009, twenty-seven 'traditional' and
'non-traditional' venues in 23 communities across Vermont, including
Brattleboro, will showcase selected work from among the hundred pieces
of art created for the project.
Brattleboro is proud to be a part of this project.
